Ultrasound is acoustical energy that can cause an increase in the following: tissue temperature, tissue metabolism, blood flow, membrane permeability, enzyme activity, collagen and tissue extensibility. Each of these may speed up healing time. Ultrasound has also been shown to decrease pain and relax tight muscles.
